7th) Hair growth & loss: some hairs a day keep the doctor away
The way our hair looks and feels reflects not only the products that we apply but also how our body is doing on the inside. We accept that hair grows and falls, it is a biological cycle and, as so, it can be influenced by many factors including our genetics.
It is estimated that an ordenary person loses from 50 to 100 strands of hair per day, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. On washday, people can lose up to 250 strands.
One of those factors can be the presence of vitamin D in our body. This vitamin can be obtained through diet as well as through sunlight exposure, so you can see that it is absolutly normal if during winter/fall your hair either falls more or grows less. There is no problem as long as these two phases alternate between them.
Unfortunatly, there are some diseases that can also cause hair to fall, let me tell you some:
Alopecia Areata - A genetic disease in which the immune system attacks hair folicules and causes hair to fall in small patches. This can also happen in other body parts and it may or may not regrow. There is no cure for this pathology.
Thyroid disorders - Thyroid is an important gland that controls almost every metabolic processes in our body. It produces hormones that are directly involved in hair growth/fall
Anemia - This disorder may have lots of different causes and may present it self in different ways but it is carachterized by the lack of iron which causes a decrease on the oxigen supply to the organs. If the organs don't have oxigen they stop working properly (from the hair folicles to the glands that produce the hormones responsile for hair growth, everything is affected)
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome - This is a tipically genetic disorder in which there are hormone imbalacements that causes cysts to develop in the ovaries. Again and because hormones control everything it results in hair loss.
Psoriasis - A chronic skin disease caused by an overactive immune system that can cause hair loss when the wound appears i the scalp
Seborreic Dermatitis - Characterized by a scalp rash that causes itchiness and flakiness, can have multiple causes such as stress, genetic background, cold weather, yeast, other disorders
In addition, hair loss can also be induced by stress, weigh loss or even pregnancy .
I've had hormone imbalacements in the past that caused my hair to fall like crazy so I just went to my general practice doctor and he prescribed my some exams. Fortunatelly we discovered the cause and everything is just fine now!
If you are suffering from severe hair loss definetly go to your GP and try to find the cause instead of trying vitamins or suplements by your self as they can mess up other biological processes in your organism.
Hope to have helped you in come way curly!!
Message me if you have any question or though, it would be my pleasure!
